Making an Impact in the US...

"Since the fall of 2006 I have been working with Mr. Cleere’s classes at the Donald McKay Elementary School in East Boston. What started out as a one time visit to the classroom has turned into a life changing experience for both me and “my kids”. I was so touched by their interest and commitment to my mission of climbing the Seven Summits that I knew one visit to the class was never going to be enough. In fact, I could go into the classroom everyday and still have more to learn and more to share."

Along with the wonderful work we do in Nepal, The Other Side of Everest Educational Foundation is making an impact right here at home. Our model is unique in that we leverage sponsorship of Nepalese children to benefit low-income inner-city youth in the United States.

By partnering with public schools in urban areas, we educate American youth about other cultures and demonstrate that despite their own challenges in life they can appreciate what they have, achieve their dreams and give to others.

Partner classes, such as Board member Jim Cleere’s 4th grade students at the Donald McKay Elementary School in Boston, incorporate Wendy Booker’s climbs into their classroom curriculum and raise funds to help support children in Nepal. Underprivileged children in two worlds are united, and in doing so we are improving their odds of success and nurturing well-educated, caring citizens who can give back to their communities as adults.

Wendy's relationship with the students at the Donald McKay Elementary School in East Boston has been a wonderful part of her quest. But it's also been a launching pad for relationships with other schools and has generated quite a bit of media interest.
